Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about T1, GVMS and UK customs movements
What is a T1 transit document?
A T1 is a Common Transit Convention (CTC) document that allows goods to move between countries under customs control without paying import duties at every border. It is lodged on the New Computerised Transit System (NCTS), backed by a transit guarantee, and discharged at the office of destination.
When do I need a T1 instead of a normal import declaration?
You need a T1 when goods are crossing one or more customs borders before reaching their final destination — for example Türkiye → EU → UK, or UK → EU → third country. If goods are simply imported into the UK and stay there, a CDS import declaration is enough.
What is GVMS and when is a GMR required?
GVMS (Goods Vehicle Movement Service) is HMRC's system for linking declarations to vehicle movements at RoRo ports like Dover, Folkestone, Holyhead and Harwich. Hauliers must have a valid Goods Movement Reference (GMR) before boarding, or the vehicle will be refused. We create and finalise the GMR for you.
Do I need an EORI number?
Yes. An EORI number is mandatory for any business or individual importing or exporting goods to or from the UK or the EU. Without one, your shipment will be held at the border. We can apply on your behalf — UK EORIs are usually issued within 3–5 working days.
Do you arrange the transit guarantee?
Yes. T1 movements must be covered by a financial guarantee that secures the duties and VAT at risk during transit. We arrange the guarantee through approved providers as part of the T1 service — you don't need your own.
Can you handle freight from Türkiye to the UK?
Yes. The Türkiye–UK corridor is one of our core lanes. We arrange road freight (FTL and groupage), prepare the T1 transit document, lodge the UK import declaration on CDS and finalise the GMR on GVMS for the RoRo crossing — all under one quote.
What documents do I need to start a transit movement?
Typically: commercial invoice, packing list, CMR or bill of lading, commodity codes, EORI numbers and the planned route (offices of departure and destination). We will guide you through the exact requirements when you send your enquiry.
How much does a T1, GVMS or CDS declaration cost?
Costs depend on the complexity, number of items and whether a transit guarantee is needed. Contact us with the details of your movement and we will return a transparent, no-obligation quote — no hidden charges.
